ARCHIVIST NOTES:

This one appears to be earliest of the set, simply labeled ‘Dossier #1’. Late ’80s marketing disguised as legit IMINT. Once translated, these pages try to read like military documents, but the even lighting and crispness of the captures betray the illusion — cleverly disguised studio shots masquerading as in-the-field photography.

Can’t fool me though. I study these not as toys or ads, but as the fingerprints left behind by the previous archivist. Somebody unintentionally built this style guide for me, long before I ever picked up a camera. Whoever it was, they left these breadcrumbs behind on saddle-stitched, halftone-printed paper.

It’s been catalogued and filed away safely with the others I’ve found so far. Precious contraband.

Paul Panfalone

Paul Panfalone is a Cleveland, OH based artist and toy photographer. He spent his childhood dreaming up stories using action figures in the backyard of his home in East Aurora, NY, appropriately nicknamed “Toytown”. Now as an adult (sort of), he imagines new worlds with those same figures and lives their adventures through the lens of his camera, much like he did back home, over thirty years ago.
