REVIEWER’S LOG:

“Another year, another catalog — same ghost behind the lens. 1991, Benelux again. This one feels stranger, though. The poses cut harder, the shadows run deeper. Some spreads look like the ad team staged a firefight without knowing who was supposed to win.

I keep flipping back to one page: Cobra figures staring dead into the camera, eyes painted plastic, but the angle feels accusatory. Kids saw play. I see a file left behind by somebody who almost understood what they were documenting.”

Paul Panfalone

Paul Panfalone is a Cleveland, OH based artist and toy photographer. He spent his childhood dreaming up stories using action figures in the backyard of his home in East Aurora, NY, appropriately nicknamed “Toytown”. Now as an adult (sort of), he imagines new worlds with those same figures and lives their adventures through the lens of his camera, much like he did back home, over thirty years ago.
