ARCHIVIST NOTES:

This one is the most impressive of the lot. There’s 2 copies here, a well-worn one and a pristine copy. Logged both then removed the staples from the lesser of the two and laid out all of its spreads in front of me – looking at them now, they read like someone else’s field notes, but in a familiar way. An anonymous photographer staging Joe and Cobra for history’s children instead of history itself.

Yea, that was too much.

Benelux, 1990. Figures frozen mid-action in color-saturated backdrops, sold as play. To me, it looks like evidence. Whoever held the camera then knew just enough to catch the poses, the angles, the swagger. I keep these scans close, studying them like enemy propaganda. The catalog is bright, glossy, meant to disappear after Christmas — but to me it’s a ghost file from a photographer I’ll never meet.”

Paul Panfalone

Paul Panfalone is a Cleveland, OH based artist and toy photographer. He spent his childhood dreaming up stories using action figures in the backyard of his home in East Aurora, NY, appropriately nicknamed “Toytown”. Now as an adult (sort of), he imagines new worlds with those same figures and lives their adventures through the lens of his camera, much like he did back home, over thirty years ago.
